The Journey of the Heart showed us the worst and most horrific aspects of human nature alongside the strongest and most uplifting responses in the face of evil. It was an eye-opening and heart-opening experience that has inspired me to lead my life in a different way.

Eric Lund, Academic Director – St Olaf College, Minnesota

The Journey of the Heart is a two-day peace-building training for young leaders, students, and social activists. It provides an understanding of the consequences of war, structural violence, and social conflict. Its emphasis is on fostering social responsibility and building peace through individual action. By mediating a people's history of the Apartheid System along with the legacies of hope and resistance in South Africa, participants are challenged to face hidden stories, histories, and actualities of the context within which they live and act everyday.

The Journey of the Heart includes a physical movement through Cape Town, with historical and personal experiences of the anti-Apartheid struggle narrated by those who were at the frontlines of it. The teaching technique combines experienced facilitating with war testimony and witnessing. Participants are given the opportunity to reflect through facilitated discussions and mind-body processes. The discussions focus attention on issues of peacemaking, sustainable dialogues, and social justice. The interactive processes allow participants to reflect individually and as a group physically, mentally and emotionally.

Participants often walk away with a "life-changing" sensation, a fuller perspective on South Africa's historical and contemporary socio-economic realities, an awakened sense of their own capacity for making change and an appreciation of their own wisdom. This journey of the heart goes beyond just talking about the word "Peace". This powerful journey through the history and streets of Cape Town puts listening from the heart into the core of peacemaking.
