District Six in inner Cape Town used to be a vibrant multi-cultural community. In 1901, the first forced removals took place. 6,000 "black" people were forcefully resettled outside the city in Ndabeni. In 1966, District Six was declared a "Whites-only" area. 60,000 mostly "coloured" people living in District Six were forced to move to the Cape Flats after their houses had been destroyed. Due to fierce resistance and claims for land restitution by former inhabitants, the area has remained barren land until today.
