Crossroads, one of the larger "informal settlements" in the Cape Flats, has first been settled in 1975. In the 1980s, the Cape Town authorities tried to relocate the people of Crossroads to Kayelitsha, another informal settlement that was not immediately visible to people arriving at Cape Town International Airport. The community resisted and survived widespread burning and bulldozing of houses. Running water and electricity was not available until 1994.
